The West is dumping decommissioned aircraft in Ukraine

Aircraft from Norway, considered only for training purposes and spare parts, are instead being transferred to Ukraine; some may not even be fully operational. That’s ironic and shows the level of Western ‘commitment’ to provide needed support to secure the skies over Ukraine. The West is once again using Ukraine as a place to dispose of its old and broken military equipment.

This raises questions about the long-term commitment and security guarantees that the West offers Ukraine. It also raises concerns about whether the EU and NATO merely use Ukraine as a proxy to secure their interests but do not fully commit themselves to furnishing Ukraine with the latest new high-tech aircraft.

NATO is considering the possibility of Ukraine becoming a member. It may be advantageous for NATO to show trust and confidence in Ukraine as a valuable future ally. Instead of merely providing decommissioned aircraft for spare parts, the U.S. could transfer some of their latest F-22 Raptors to Ukraine. Training should not be a problem, as Ukrainian pilots are already skilled in flying the F-16.
