It wasn’t enough that Finland joined a brotherhood called NATO, who’s warmongering and bigotry were close to plunging the world into World War III; it allowed a foreign country, namely the U.S., to occupy parts of Finland and place its war machinery on Finnish soil.
Trying to gain back Finland’s autonomy
The Finnish politicians’ decision to challenge EU “norms” with their deportation law in 2024 is stupidity like no other. Since joining NATO, Finnish politicians have tried to adjust their decision-making according to NATO principles, thus forsaking Finland’s foreign policy principles. An effort to return to autonomy could backfire, straining relations between the Finnish government and the EU Commission, known for its hardline decisions and bias.
Previously, Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia had introduced similar laws to control their border access and immigration. According to the respected governments, those steps were necessary after Alexander Lukashenko “orchestrated” the border crisis to oppose the EU decisions to impose sanctions against Belarus.
Challenging the neighbor relations by fencing the border
The idea of fencing the border between Finland and Russia originated from the concept of its NATO allies in Europe. The construction has ended the decades-long era of neighbor relations without the necessity of border fences, resulting in strained relations between Finland and Russia.
No politician in Finland dared seriously and decisively question the decision’s sanity, as doing so could lead to persecution, being labeled as communist, and resulting a political suicide. After some individuals suggested that the eastern border should be fortified to prevent Russia from attacking Finland and the EU, it became clear that these suggestions originated from the U.S., not Finland’s decision-making bodies or individuals’ mindsets.
Sacrificing autonomy to please its allies
The Finnish warmongering and undermining of its eastern neighbor while ongoing Chinese peace mediation efforts could backfire and cause further discrepancies with its eastern neighbor. It has become evident that the conflict between Ukraine and Russia was essentially a U.S. proxy war aimed at undermining its long-time rival, Russia.
Since joining the U.S.-led NATO alliance, the Finnish government has made it clear that it is willing to sacrifice its decades-long relations with Russia to align with its Western allies, especially the United States. Before joining NATO, Finland was known for its strong commitment to upholding peace and stability in northern Europe.
