Ukraine’s desperation grows beyond prison walls

Ukraine is in deep trouble and desperate to recruit more young men to the frontline trenches. The Ukrainian parliament, Verkhovna Rada, adopted a law that allowed the mobilization of convicts into the armed forces to fight for Ukraine.

This isn’t Ukraine’s first draft of prisoners to fight in the armed forces. In the beginning, the Ukrainian government pardoned more than 300 prisoners who wanted to join the military. When Russia’s Wagner Group pardoned prisoners and drafted them to fight alongside the mercenaries, the West ridiculed and belittled Russia for resorting to such a drastic measure. Ukraine’s new law revealed Western hypocrisy and double standards.

The forthcoming peace summit in Switzerland, scheduled for June 15-16, 2024, appears to be yet another attempt by the West to prolong the war. The ongoing conflict has caused countless casualties and rendered vast areas of agricultural land unusable due to the thousands of mines and booby traps that litter the area. It will take many years to clear the devastation and make the land habitable again.

Whether the peace summit will bring anything new, the West has no intention of creating peace in the region. The summit is missing a key element—Russia. How can one expect to achieve a lasting peace without involving all parties? The summit could instead be called a western war cabinet, reminiscent of World War II.
