The U.S. and the UN have been trying to bring peace to the Middle East for the last 75 years and failed, with a prominent letter F. This China mediation as a peacemaker is refreshing and demonstrates a significant chance of success.
There is no understanding why the U.S. vetoed a U.N. Security Council resolution that called for a temporary ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas conflict. The UN Security Council has become a playground for governments with veto rights. This is further exacerbated by the fact that the top five major financial contributors to the UN have shown no indications of desiring lasting peace.
The leaders of Russia and China seem to be the only ones not intimidated by the U.S.’s aggressive foreign policy and hypocrisy. On the one hand, the U.S. claims to support lasting peace initiatives but provides Israel with more ammunition to slaughter Palestinians. The U.S. has a permanent reputation for placing itself above humanitarian and international laws and UN resolutions. As a result, it is not considered a credible partner in the Middle East two-nation peace initiative. Numerous Western nations emphasize the importance of upholding international law. However, Israel’s actions for the last 75 years have failed to comply with these laws and cannot be considered lawful. If Western leaders were to examine the situation closely, they would acknowledge that Israel’s actions fit the definition of an authoritarian and oppressive government. These characteristics are condemned in the humanitarian law.
Also, there is no justification for the latest Hamas attack. Violence should not be the solution in any situation. This attack has caused more harm to the Middle
East peace initiative than it was meant to revenge the past historical injustice in the hands of Israel. The Palestinian civilians will bear the highest price and carry the consequences of this latest atrocity. The attack and ongoing brutal counterattack have caused immense suffering for the Palestinian civilians.
The Middle East needs a lasting peace initiative, and if the one interested in mediating and bringing it to the world is China, then let it be so. A constant confrontation between the West and East might cause the inevitable and finally destroy all we have built. It might be a viable solution for some, but for most of us, it is not. It has come a time when governments in the West and the East must understand that this situation must not continue.
There has never been a more appropriate moment in human history than today to agree upon mutual guidelines. Today is when world leaders have a chance to reach out to each other and achieve the impossible – lasting world peace.
